Junior Bowls News
14/09/08 The Comp today, was an end of season
for Chorley & District Junior Bowling League. There were 45 juniors and
45 seniors, all the juniors played with family members or club members.
To complete the competition, three greens in Chorley were used, 2 on
Coronation Park and 1 by kind permission of St Mary's Parish Centre. The
competition grows each year and another club will join the League next
year. There was a good atmosphere
and many passers by stopped to watch with amazement at how many young
people were bowling. Going off today's performance we will soon need
more bowling greens. Hilda Jones.

Chorley Junior Bowlers Visit the Famous Waterloo

On the 21st June the
64 members of the Chorley & District Junior Crown Green Bowling League
had a fabulous visit to the Famous Waterloo Bowling Green in Blackpool.
This visit for young bowlers was equivalent to a young footballer going
to Wembley. They played bowls from 11.30am until 4.30pm with a short
welcoming break for lunch when they sampled the excellent cuisine of the
Waterloo Hotel (and dry off a little). The bowlers, aged 7 – 16, played
in three groups, group one being the youngest and group three older or
more experienced. First and second place in group one went to Nicholas
Brewis (Weldbank Chorley Juniors) with 26 points and Matthew Gill
(Windmill Ormskirk Juniors) with 25 points. First and second place in
group two went to joint winners Lewis Collinson (Weldbank Chorley
Juniors)
and Hayden Jones (Shevington Juniors) with 23 points and Katherine
Moore (St. Mary’s Chorley Juniors) with 22 points. First and second
places in group three went to Ryan Ashcroft (Coppull Juniors) with
46 points and Grant Parker (Wigan Juniors) with 42 points.
First and second placed bowlers received trophies, all participants
received medals. The weather could have been kinder – it rained all
day – but the bowlers didn't even notice it, most of the time. The
event was organized by Chorley Borough Bowls Forum but could not have
taken place without generous donations from the Chorley & District
Bowling Leagues and a grant from Chorley Borough Council Sports Forum.
Thanks also must go to the Coaches, Instructors, Parents and Volunteers
who worked throughout the day to ensure the safety and smooth running of
the event. Report from Hilda Jones – Chorley Borough Bowls Forum Chair

I
think we all agree it was a great day for our youngsters yesterday playing
in their first tournament at Newton-Le-Willows. It was an experience we hope
they will remember and take part in next year. For beginners new to the
game, they did very well up against some very experienced junior bowlers.
There is a selection of photos
Brian took on the gallery.
Thanks to all at St. Patricks
(Newton-le-Willows) for organising the event and a special thanks to the
bowlers (some reluctant bowlers who took part I am especially grateful for
their contribution). Thanks Chris. H.

team. As the Windmill only started this year, Shevington went to the
Windmill with 3 inexperienced players and their Captain Gavin Love. The
players were matched according to abilities which made the games close
fought. Liam Hutchings and Helen Chivers experienced a match for the first
time and both bowled brilliantly on the Windmill green.

Junior Bowls
'taster' sessions have been introduced to over 1500 pupils throughout the
Wigan Borough. The Project organiser and Lancashire Crown Green Bowling
Development Officer, Peter Forshaw and myself want to thank everyone who
helped in making the project a huge success. This year
Garswood Hall Bowling Club
introduced the scheme to schools in the Ashton area. The enthusiastic
volunteers and instructors introduced 500+ pupils to Crown Green Bowls, a
remarkable achievement for their 1st year. Primary schools (mainly final
year pupils) were also introduced to the project this year, again with
tremendous success. Again many thanks to all the volunteers and instructors
who gave up their time to help. Peter and I hope to see you all again next
year.
Thanks again,

Shevington Cons Juniors bowling team played away at St. Mary's
A
Juniors. The Shevington team travelled with 2 new players due to the
Captain, Gavin Love, injuring his wrist on a friend's trampoline, get well
soon Gavin. The new players excelled. Karl's brother Tom
Sutherland and Rebecca Hutchings (dragged out of the shower by her Grandma)
showed remarkable composure on a difficult bowling green. Their first
competitive Junior League game, both achieving wins. Tom came away with the
coveted weekly Best Winner Trophy (see Photo Gallery). The green, at the rear of St. Mary's church in Chorley, was
not as quick as our last visit but the Juniors kept their heads and calmly followed the marks.
The green must be lucky for the brothers as Karl won the trophy here in his
first game. My thanks to Rebecca and her family for their support at such
late notice. St. Mary's also deserve my thanks in making a team available
during the holiday period. Maureen Belshaw, Frank, Bert and parents all
helped with the arrangements. Shevington team appreciated the hard work they
do in providing the facilities, equipment, drinks, Sunshine etc. Thanks again, Chris. H.

Shevington Cons Juniors
had a difficult game, last Saturday, against an experienced Coppull Cons

team. Although Coppull were playing a Junior short, the team's experience
almost overcame Shevington. This again went to the final game on the green,
Ben Allen had a great game with Robert Baxendale and deserved the Best Weekly
Winner Trophy. With the Coppull team being a player short, it was an ideal
opportunity to introduce 2 new Shevington Juniors to the competitive element
of the Junior League. The new team members Tom Sutherland (Shevi Juniors
logo designer) and Phil Chivers played against each other with instruction
from Harry Butler on the finer points of the rules. Phil played well to beat
Tom but both showed they had the quality to play for the team and will get

12/07/07 Yesterday was the last of the
Inter-schools tournaments (possibly a Champion of Champions tournament later
in the year). Although the weather was damp, it did not dampen the spirits
of the school children taking part in the four festivals around the Wigan
Borough. Thanks to all participants, teachers, volunteers and bowling clubs
for making the festivals another tremendous success. Peter Forshaw and I
hope to see you all again next year. This year, a few primary schools also
had 'taster' sessions with their local bowling clubs and thoroughly enjoyed
themselves. Well over a thousand pupils in the Borough were introduced to
Crown Green Bowls.

bowling team playing away to Weldbank A
Juniors. As you can see from the results below, the
Shevington team put up a terrific fight against the top of the league. The Weldbank
A team are a credit to their coaches, all excellent, experienced bowlers. Jennifer Lynch
overwhelmed Luke Calderbank with some tremendous bowls to
put her team into a great lead and return the earlier defeat away at
Shevington, with interest. Shevington Captain Gavin Love, Ryan Craven (a
fantastic performance from the new member of the team) and Ben Allen all had
tight games with their opponents Thomas Walsh, Jack Morris and Alex Straw. All
games went to all-but across but only Ben Allen could find the point required to
win the game and win the coveted Shevington weekly Best Winner Trophy. All the
players rewarded the numerous spectators with their bowling skills and deserved
the standing applause they received from them. Next Saturday 12.30pm a young
Shevington team are at home to St. Mary's B Juniors.

Bowling Report From Stuart Colothan, Specialist P.E Teacher, St. Wilfrids
C.E Primary School During September, Year 6 pupils from St. Wilfrids C.E
Primary School were given the unique opportunity to learn how to play ‘crown
green bowling’ as part of their P.E lesson. The children went to St.
Wilfrid’s bowling green where they were greeted by a large number of the
club members. In small groups, the children were taught by the volunteers
how to hold a wood, send and bowl a length. After some practise the children
experienced playing a game and learned how to score.
Mr Stuart Colothan,
Specialist P.E Teacher said, "This was a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to
experience another different sport. It was an absolute pleasure to watch the
children interact with the older members of the community in such a happy
environment. On behalf of the school, I would like to say a special thank you to
Joan Bannister and all the other club members who gave up their spare time to
support the children, for making this new and exciting experience possible."
Year 6 pupils Megan Higgins
and Elliot Platt said, "We thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and would recommend
crown green bowling to people of any age. The helpers gave us some great advice,
which made it easier for us to play. We had a brilliant time bowling and hope to
play again in the Summer!"
Assistant Club Secretary, Joan Bannister, said, "The day was so hot and the
atmosphere was electric, but it was a pleasure to be there. Why? The pupils of
St. Wilfrids were obviously enjoying their experience as first-time crown green
bowlers. They behaved so well and were a credit to the school and to themselves.
The club helpers, who worked so hard, and myself were happy to be involved in
this historic occasion – and it was a joy to behold. The idea of young people’s
‘taster’ bowling was embraced by the bowling club committee, after all – young
people are our future sportsmen and sportswomen. Representing Lancashire County
is within the reach of these enthusiastic boys and girls, and we will give them
every encouragement. The 2012 Olympics could be for them. What a goal to aim
for!!!"
